Photodynamic Therapy is a treatment technique in which a topically applied medication is activated using a special wavelength of light.
We use a medication called Levulan that we apply to the skin and allow to incubate for a period of time before treating the skin with a special light that transforms the medication to its active form. Allowing the medication to sit on the skin for up to a few hours allows it to be absorbed preferentially by the skins cells we are aiming to treat. These can include precancerous cells in conditions such as actinic keratosis or overactive oil glands in the case of acne or excessive oiliness.
